Commuters fleeced by autorickshaw drivers

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: P. Janardhan had a tough time negotiating with autorickshaw drivers on Tuesday. Those standing on the road outside the City Railway Station were demanding not less than Rs. 300 to ply to his house near PES College in Srinagar.

Mr. Janardhan arrived in the city from Chennai around 11 a.m. The few autorickshaws parked near the pre-paid autorickshaw counter were not ready to go on hire. Not convinced with the fare sought by the drivers, Mr. Janardhan got into a free bus to the Kempegowda bus terminus and another bus home.

Mr. Janardhan was among the many commuters who were harried by the demand of excess fare by autorickshaw drivers at the City Railway Station and the Kempegowda bus terminus. The excess fare was being demanded under the watchful eyes of the police, who were not of much help to the commuters.

Taking advantage of the situation were the taxi drivers who were seen drawing commuters to their vehicles by asking Rs. 50 less than what the autorickshaw drivers were demanding. “We have been able to attract only a few,” said A. Manjunath, a taxi driver.
