Chitradurga: The Chitradurga City Municipal Council (CMC) under the leadership of the new president, Sunita Mallikarjun, launched a Plastic Eradication Drive in various localities of the city here on Wednesday.

Over a dozen municipal members, office-bearers of non-governmental organisations and students participated in the jatha.

“The objective of the jatha is to create awareness among the citizens on the hazardous consequences on ecology and human health owing to the excessive use of plastic in our daily lives,” said Ms. Sunita.

Ms. Sunita, who got elected as municipal president on Monday, had promised to strive to make the city plastic-free. She said she would lay emphasis on greenery.

She said that plastic created a number of civic problems, including clogging of drainages.

The jatha, which commenced from the Chitradurga Fort area, passed through various localities, including Anebagilu, Chikkapete and BD Road, before converging at the Onake Obavva Circle.

During the jatha, the participants distributed pamphlets containing information about the adverse effects of plastic on ecology. Municipal vice-president Allahbaksh and municipal commissioner Vijay Kumar were present.
