Woman surrenders in abduction case

Udhagamandalam: A woman who has been convicted along with a former police officer in an abduction case surrendered at the district court here on Wednesday.

According to the police, Mary Kutty alias P.T. Thangam, and D. Ethiraj, who a former Deputy Superintendent of Police, Crime Records Bureau, were arrested in 1987 for abducting two girls with the intention of using them in flesh trade.

They were sentenced by a trial court to undergo three years' rigorous imprisonment. Their appeals were dismissed by Madras High Court and Supreme Court. Consequently, a Crime Branch CID police team went to Chennai and arrested Ethiraj. He was lodged at the Central Jail in Coimbatore on Tuesday.

Mary Kutty could not be found in her house at Azhwar Thirunagar, near Virugambakkam.

It was learnt that she had moved to Changanassery in Kerala.

Even as arrangements were being made to locate her, she turned up at the District and Sessions Court here and surrendered before the District Judge In-Charge Narayanasamy. She was taken to the Central Jail in Coimbatore.
