NEW DELHI: Antonio Viani D'Cunha of Karnataka defeated G. Akash of Tamil Nadu in the seventh round to gain the lead in the open event with 6.5 points in the National sub-junior chess championship at the Kulachi Hansraj Model School, Ashok Vihar, on Wednesday. Enjoying the advantage of white, D'Cunha pressed ahead in the middle game and won a piece. He converted the advantage into a full point, to take a half-point lead over top-seed Sahaj Grover and second seed Girish A. Koushik. Grover was held to a draw for the second time. In the girls event, P.V. Nandhidhaa of Tamil Nadu won her seventh successive match, and stretched her lead over Sonakshi Rathore of Rajasthan and Sunyasakta Satpathy of Orissa by one point.
