Central team arrives in West Bengal

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: A Central team, led by a senior official of the Union Agriculture Ministry, arrived in West Bengal on Wednesday and held a meeting with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and three key Ministers and Departmental Secretaries before leaving for spot visits to the 11 districts declared drought-affected by the State government.

Finance Minister Asim Kumar Dasgupta, who was also present at the meeting, told journalists at the Secretariat that the eight-member team met Mr. Bhattacharjee, Agriculture Minister Naren De, Disaster Management and Rural Development Minister Mortaza Hossain and Secretaries from Departments, including fisheries, a sector that has been hit badly due to paucity of rain. “The meeting was a positive one,” Dr. Dasgupta said.

The team split into two groups, with one going to Paschim Medinipur, Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum, Bardhaman, Hooghly and South 24 Parganas by road and the other up north to Malda, and then to Murshidabad, Nadia and North 24 Parganas by train.
