God of big things in vibrant moods


Ganesha Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi is round the corner. It is time to welcome the elephant-headed son of lord Shiva and Parvati, who is believed to the remover of all hurdles. Bhadrapada shukla chaturthi (September 11) is the birthday of Lord Ganesha who is widely worshiped as the God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.

Two to three months prior to Ganesh Chaturthi, artistic clay models of Lord Ganesha are made for sale by especially skilled artisans. They are beautifully decorated and depict Lord Ganesh in various poses.

The festival is also time to prepare various delicacies that are Elephant God's favorites such as modaka, and kadbu. The residents of Bangalore celebrate the Gauri festival, which falls one day prior to Ganesh Chaturthi.

The trend for celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi - colourfully decorated pandals, cultural programmes and more - is a very recent phenomenon in Bangalore. Probably, this became popular in the last three decades. Earlier, the festival was celebrated traditionally at homes.

However, the shopping list for the occassion will also be a long one. Besides, the pooja items, one indulges in shopping for sweets, saris and jewellery.

There will be hectic activity in market areas such as Malleswarm, K. R. Market, Commercial Street, and other areas. There will be huge demand for flowers, garlands, plantain leaves, fruits and pooja items. A large number of people visit temples and religious institutions.

Shops that sell saris and jewellery welcome you with warmth, a space designed thoughtfully and tastefully doe the occasion.

Showroom spaces brings out the occasion's sensibility in the most tactile and sensual way.

Shops sell items to decorate Ganesh pandals. Shops will have everything starting from the basic thermocol sheets, glitters, wrapping paper, range of traditional and contemporary polyresin wooden ganesha, brass pooja items, wooden and metal chowki to malas and torans, ganesha lights, regular streamers and LED lamps.

They also sell home décor ites such as pretty curtains, lamps, designer bedsheets and so on.
