Geelani arrested

Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR: Police arrested hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani from his residence on Wednesday and lodged him in a local police station.

His arrest sparked protests in many areas.

On Tuesday, Mr Geelani had announced that he would offer Eid prayers at the Hazratbal shrine. He threatened to defy restrictions if he was not allowed to visit the shrine on Wednesday.

Witnesses said that when a police party arrived at his residence, he did not offer resistance but asked it to wait so that he could pack his belongings. He was taken to the nearby Humhama station.

Police sources said Mr. Geelani would be kept in custody till Eid.
