NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday enhanced compensation granted by the Delhi Government to the families of the dead and the injured in a stampede at a Government Senior Secondary School at Khajuri Khas in North-East Delhi in September last year. The Government had earlier granted a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of those children who were killed and Rs. 50,000 each to the injured. A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Manmohan hiked the compensation amounts of Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 75,000. The Court also pulled up the officials concerned for not abiding by the building by-laws and giving the clearance to the school building without proper inspection. How permission was granted to the school for construction of a staircase of 0.5 metre width when the by-laws say that it should not be less than of 1.5 metres width, the Bench asked. The Court also directed the authorities to make the staircase as wide as possible and improve the drainage system so that the problem of water-logging in the school premises was solved. There was water-logging on the school campus on the day of the incident.
