holy trail:The car being taken out in procession in Poondi Matha Basilica. THANJAVUR: The car festival of Poondi Matha Basilica at Poondi near Thirukattupalli in Thanjavur district was held on Wednesday. Hundreds of people witnessed the festival. Tastefully decorated, illuminated car with Mary's idol was taken in a procession around the Basilica and the village. Fire works lit up the sky. The car festival was held to mark the birthday celebrations of Mother Mary. The festival started on August 30 with hoisting of flag. It came to an end on Thursday. A mass was held at the Basilica to mark the conclusion of the festival. The Basilica is located between Cauvery and Kollidam rivers. It was built by Veeramamunivar. Mother Mary's statue at Poondi has come from Lourdes in France.
