No reimbursement for ‘B' category MBBS seats

HYDERABAD: Responding to the criticism against the revised guidelines for over tuition fee reimbursement, the government has affirmed that the fee payable for self-financing courses will not be restricted to Rs 20,000 as being interpreted.

The fee payable will be fixed by the Admission Fee Regulatory Committee (AFRC).

At a media conference here on Thursday, four Ministers--Botcha Satyanarayana (Panchayat Raj), D. Sridhar Babu (Higher Education), M. Venkataramana Rao (Technical Education) and Mohd Ahmedullah (Minorities Welfare)--said as the fee amounts fixed by the AFRC were always higher, the exchequer would have to shell down an additional Rs 166 crore annually on the listed 143 self-finance courses covered by the reimbursement scheme.

Giving examples, they said the fee reimbursement was restricted to Rs 20,000 for MBA earlier but now, a sum of Rs 32,000, which included special fee, would be paid. Similarly, the AFRC fixed Rs 1.4 lakh for M. Pharmacy--Rs 84,000 higher. Mr. Satyanarayana made it clear that the tuition fee for “B” category MBBS students will not be reimbursed.

Taking exception to the demand made by Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu to extend the scheme to these seats too, he said the coverage was never given to “B” category seats except in 2008-09.

SC, ST students

In case of SC/ST students, it was the Union Government which was allowing the reimbursement for ‘B' category seats. The State Government would take a view whether to follow the Centre for future action. The Minister criticised Mr Naidu for giving out truncated versions of the GO to the public, as usual, with his own political agenda.

On insistence of 75 per cent attendance by students to be eligible for reimbursement, he said the decision for this was taken after consulting students' bodies and college managements in line with the rules framed by the universities and the UGC.
