Sonia for power generation from all sources

Sujay Mehdudia

NEW DELHI: United Progress Alliance chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday dedicated a 980 MW (2x490 MW) Dadri power project stage-II of NTPC Limited to the nation.

The project will provide power for next month's Commonwealth Games here.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Gandhi said that to meet the growing electricity requirement in the country, generation from all sources of energy was the need of the hour.

“We need to generate power from all sources of energy to meet the demand. It is evident that affordable electricity is yet to be provided to all sections of society, and the power sector has to lead the way in providing it. In the future, attention should be on clean and renewable energy,” she noted.

“Dadri has been earmarked to provide electricity for the Commonwealth Games…I congratulate those who have contributed to this project,” she said. The project now has a total capacity of 2,637 MW, which includes 840 MW stage-I, 980 MW stage-II, and 817 MW (gas-based).

The equipment for the project has been supplied by the BHEL.

Solar unit

“There are plans to add solar capacity to the Dadri power station. We plan to have a solar unit in the same complex,” Power Secretary P. Uma Shankar said.

Ms. Gandhi said it was a matter of great pride that the work of this stage was completed in a record 39 months.

Union Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that with the objective of providing adequate and reliable power to all, his Ministry had set the target of adding 62,000 MW in the 11 {+t} {+h} Plan, which will be three times higher than the capacity added in the 10 {+t} {+h} Plan.
