KOLKATA: The “characteristic” of the Trinamool Congress is to utter nothing but lies, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said here on Thursday.Mr. Bhattacharjee was referring to reports in a section of the local media quoting the Trirnamool Congress chief whip in the Lok Sabha, Sudip Bandhopadhyay, as saying that the Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram had told him three months ago that Mr. Bhattacharjee had confided to the Minister that he had failed and (his government) was on the way out. Stating the report as “humorous,” Mr. Bhattacharjee told journalists at the Secretariat: “I would also like you to know that I am here and will carry on the work of countering this unruly party [Trinamool Congress].” Describing the Trinamool Congress as a party whose characteristic is indulging in falsehoods, Mr. Bhattacharjee said what had been said in the reports was “another such instance.” Pointing out that it could be that the Union Home Minister does not know the Trinamool Congress for too long Mr. Bhattacharjee said he would have to “alert Mr. Chidambaram about this party” the next time they meet in New Delhi. “Previously it [Trinamool] was with the BJP. Now it is with the Congress”, he added. Mr. Bhattacharjee also said that when he is in the capital next he would ask Mr. Chidambaram about what he might have said to Mr. Bandhopadhyay regarding the matter. He found it strange that what he and Mr. Chidambaram had talked about [at the meeting referred to by Mr. Bandhopadhyay] was being spoken of by the Trinamool Congress MP. Mr. Bhattacharjee had described the Trinamool Congress “as a party of grotesque lies and slander” and its chief, Mamata Banerjee, as a “practised liar” at an event organised by the ruling Left Front here on August 31.
