Eco concern: Animal rights activist Amala Akkineni releasing ‘Hyderabad Environment Map for Everyone' at a programme organised by NGOs in the city on Thursday. HYDERABAD: An environment map of the city that offers a spatial perspective of various environment parameters including water bodies, greenery and levels of ground water apart from air and noise pollution was released here on Thursday. Released by animal welfare activist and Blue Cross Hyderabad founder Amala Akkineni and brought out by GeoMap System, The Hyderabad Environment Map for Everyone (THEME) covers 2,750 square km and was developed using Remote Sensing and GIS. From the images and data, the environmental parameters were analysed by experienced professionals and helped by D.P.Rao, former Director, National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), V.Raghava Swamy, NRSC and G.S.Kumar, former Director, Survey of India. “The map is an initiative to promote environment perspective amongst citizens and also has incorporates practical hints on observing better environment practices,” G.Shiv Karan of Sukuki Exnora said. Also at the event at G. Pulla Reddy Building, Somajiguda, Amala Akkineni inaugurated the distribution centre of eco-Ganesha idols prepared from clay and called for promotion of such initiatives. “The initiative to promote idols made of clay is wonderful and this will ensure that water bodies are not affected,” she said. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) in association with different NGO groups has come up with these idols in small and big sizes which are put for distribution at different centres across the city. The distribution centre at G.Pulla Reddy Building has been coordinated by Sukuki Exnora. HMDA Member (Environment), Sunil Kumar Gupta informed that 50,000 small and 500 big eco-Ganesha idols priced at Rs.10 and Rs.1,000 respectively were made available this festive season.
