VISAKHAPATNAM: For the first time, the National Mazdoor Union (NMU) won all the 10 units in the Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation, Visakhapatnam region, by a handsome margin in the trade union elections held on Thursday. Out of the total 4,962 voters in the Visakhapatnam region, 3,587 cast their votes for the NMU, thus making it the recognised union in the region. The employees had cast two votes – one for the regional recognition and the second for the State recognition. The result of the State recognition will be known in a fortnight. Regional NMU secretary Y.S. Rao and president Mohan led the celebrations on Thursday night after the results were announced at 8 p.m. The polling began at 5 a.m. and closed at 5.30 p.m. in all the nine depots and one non-operations unit. Employees Union along with Staff and Workers' Union supported by the CITU had been winning the Anakapalle, Narsipatnam and Paderu depots in the past but lost there also giving the NMU an opportunity. The votes polled by both the unions (NMU and EU combine) are as follows: Waltair depot (556 – 146); Maddelapalem (571 – 127); Visakha Rural (351 – 217); Simhachalam (447 – 155); Gajuwaka (566 – 157); Steel city (341 – 114); Anakapalle ( 257 – 189); Narsipatnam (293 – 165); Paderu (128 – 37); and Non-Operations (77 – 11).
