Labourer buried alive

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Johny (32), a labourer was buried alive while another escaped with minor injuries when the walls of a nearly 100-year-old building caved in while it was being demolished at Gowliguda Chaman in Afzalgunj on Thursday. The injured, Sunder (30), was admitted to Osmania General Hospital. He was recuperating and was said to be out of danger, according to doctors.

The GHMC officials served notices to one Vinod Nimkar, owner of a two-floor building, to demolish it declaring it unfit for occupation earlier. The demolition work could not be taken up since a tenant on the ground floor moved a local court.

Demolition of the remaining portion of the building began with its owner assigning the work to a contractor who engaged six labourers.

Four of them were pulling down the walls on the second floor while Johny and Sunder were clearing goods and debris on the ground floor when the walls collapsed suddenly.
