Concern over Ohio move

Nagesh Prabhu

Anand Sharma

Bangalore: Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Anand Sharma on Friday expressed concern over the move by the State of Ohio in the United States to ban outsourcing of IT services.

“Policy-makers must take a global view” in the era of globalisation. Nearly 95 per cent of jobs in the BPO sector in Europe and the United Kingdom have been captured by the locals there. “A large number of locals in Europe are getting jobs in the BPO sector,” he told reporters here.

Mr. Sharma, who will be visiting the U.S. later this month, said he would take up the issue with the U.S. administration. “I hope they will reflect on our concerns and find a meaningful solution.”

Noting the contributions of the Indian IT industry to the global economy, the Minister said issues regarding outsourcing were under discussion since the global economic slowdown.
