Six projects in memory of Krishnadevaraya

M. Malleswara Rao

A national museum, a guest house and a road from Penukonda to the hill top planned

A peetham in Nagarjuna University and an auditorium in Vizag among the projects

HYDERABAD: Following up the 500 {+t} {+h} anniversary celebrations of Sri Krishnadevaraya's coronation, the government has finalised an action plan to implement six projects at different places in the State to mark the occasion.

Under this plan, a national museum “Bhuvana Vijayam National Museum” will be built at a cost of Rs. 12 crore on the top of a hill at Penukonda in Anantapur district, which was the last capital of Vijayanagara kings. The museum will exhibit sculptures and articles not only of the Vijayanagara kings, but also those of other periods. Bhuvana Vijayam was the name given by Sri Krishnadevaraya to the eight-poet court he had maintained called “Ashtradiggajams”.

Tourist attraction

The plan was finalised by the Cabinet sub-committee at a meeting here earlier this week under the chairmanship of Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy. S. Chellappa, Principal Secretary, Culture, told this correspondent here on Friday that that the Chief Minister had cleared a Rs. 5-crore project proposed to build a road from Penukonda town to the hilltop. The plan was to make Penukonda a future tourist attraction. A guest-house would also be built on the top of the hill.

MP's gesture

The third project envisages setting up of a peetham (chair) in the name of Sri Krishnadevaraya in Nagarjuna University. Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, Congress MP, has offered some financial assistance for this project. Mr. Chellappa said the government had addressed a letter to the Union Defence Minister M. M. Pallam Raju seeking action on establishing a rifle firing range at Penukonda for training army men, as promised by him during the celebrations.

He said an auditorium would be built at Visakhapatnam with Rs. 3 crore by T. Subbarami Reddy in the memory of Sri Krishnadevaraya.

On its part, the government would extend whatever assistance required.
