Indiscriminate dumping of garbage continues

Serena Josephine. M

Crying for attention: Garbage dumped along the roadside near Teachers Colony in Tirupattur.

TIRUPATTUR: The sides of the arterial Vaniyambadi Road have turned into garbage dumps. Waste from residential areas and shops is being dumped at various places along the stretch for quite sometime.

A number of residential areas such as Asiriyar Nagar, Lakshmi Nagar and Ashok Nagar are situated along Vaniyambadi Road coming under the Pachal panchayat, which falls under the limits of Jolarpet Panchayat Union. Residents and shopkeepers indiscriminately dump garbage at several places on the road.

The roadsides are an eyesore, according to pedestrians. Garbage could be found strewn around, waiting to be cleared by the local body. “Residents and shopkeepers have been continuously dumping garbage on the main road. One reason for this is the lack of adequate garbage bins in residential areas and on the main road,” said Sankar, a shopkeeper.

Entry points to a number of residential areas such as Thillai Nagar have turned into garbage dumps. Waste including plastics have piled up at the entrance to several localities, residents said.

“Vacant plots in nearby residential areas have also turned into garbage dumps. Residents continue to dump garbage in the vacant plots owing to the lack of proper garbage bins,” a resident said.

The dumping of garbage has also led to an increase in the number of stray dogs.

However, officials of the Jolarpet Panchayat Union said that the Pachal panchayat leader had been told to take steps to clear the garbage from both sides of the road. “Plastic items are being dumped on the roadside. We have asked the panchayat to clear the garbage as shops, hospitals and residents have been dumping waste on the main road,” a member of the union said.
