Crucial issue: Ashok Reddy, convener of Rythu Kutumbala Ikya Karyacharana Committee explaining the plan on the Pranahita-Chevella Link-7 at a farmers' meeting in Nizamabad on Sunday.

KAMAREDDY (NIZAMABAD): The Rythu Kutumbala Ikya Karyacharana Committee has given a call to the farming community to launch a united movement to exert pressure on the government for the immediate release of required budget for the execution of Link-7 (20th to 22nd packages) of the Pranahita-Chevella lift irrigation scheme to irrigate the 19 parched mandals of the district.

Desertification threat

At a meeting here on Sunday, the rythu leaders and the committee convener Ankshapur Ashok Reddy felt that there was no other alternative than the implementation of the Link-7 as part of the mega lift scheme to provide water to major portion of the district which otherwise would have become a desert in a few years to come.

They deplored that though foundation was laid for the project in 2007 and tenders were called for in 2009, it remained a non-starter till date. The lift scheme was originally designed to give water for 16 lakh acres in six districts.

The link-7 comprising packages 20, 21 and 22 costing an estimated Rs. 3,200 crore if completed would irrigate 3.04 lakh acres in 19 mandals besides catering to the drinking water needs in all the villages. The government planned this link to divert 25 tmcft of Godavari water from Binola village in Navipet mandal.

Mr. Ashok Reddy, who spearheaded struggles earlier for the construction of Gutpa and Ali Sagar lift schemes, said works under the package-9 meant to divert 32 tmcft of water to Kareemnagar and Warangal districts were already launched. However, the link-7 which was much useful to the district remained as it was, he pointed out.

Appealing to Chief Minister K. Rosaiah and the Minister for Medical Education P. Sudarshan Reddy to take initiative to release the necessary fund for the scheme at the earliest, he said the farming community pinned a lot of hopes on the project.
