Body of missing fisherman found

Manas Dasgupta

AHMEDABAD: The recovery of the body on Sunday of one of the 16 missing fishermen in the rough sea on Friday has spread gloom among the fishing community.

The Gujarat Fisheries Department, the Indian Coast Guard and the police have launched an intensive joint operation to locate the remaining 15 fishermen, all from Navsari in south Gujarat, who were missing in the sea off the Okha coast in Jamnagar district.

The police said the fisherman's body was located near Shivrajpur close to the temple town of Dwarka, while Arunadevi, one of the six boats which capsized in the sea with the missing fishermen, was also found in a highly damaged condition. However, there was no information about the remaining five boats and the 15 missing fishermen, the police said.

Six boats, one registered at Porbandar and the other five in Navsari, carrying 52 fishermen had capsized in stormy weather in the high seas. The search operations by the coast guard and others were hampered by the rough sea, but the recovery of the body cast serious doubts about the well-being of those missing.
