Corporate aid for Gopichand academy

V. V. Subrahmanyam

HYDERABAD: Not many may be aware that badminton champ Pullela Gopichand had even mortgaged his own assets to raise funds initially to start his now world class Gopichand Badminton Academy in Gachibowli.

Gopi, who was concerned till a few days ago, maintaining the magnificent complex, has something to cheer as some corporate groups have come forward to support his venture. “I was really scared about maintaining the stadium as I also have to pay for at least three coaches,” says the chief national coach.

He explains that after the Delhi Commonwealth Games, he will not be getting Sports Authority of India's (SAI) financial support which is being extended now because of the national camps. “The rough maintenance cost of the entire complex is Rs.15 lakh per month,” he reminds.

The academy has cost Rs.9 crore till now, but that is a different story as to how it had come up with no financial support at all from the government saves allotting the site on lease. Now, the corporate groups have come forward to help the ace shuttler with the concept of a corporate tournament – “Lets Shuttle”.

Mr. Shakti Sagar, CII head of AP, says that the tournament is for corporate employees to enjoy and also lend a helping hand to Gopi. “We are impressed with not just the facilities here but the commitment level of Gopi. So, we are looking far beyond and have a dream for him to produce top 10 players in the world from this academy in future,” he says.

Dr. Ramesh Babu of TiE declared that the corporate tournament will be an annual feature with the twin-objective of giving back something to the sport. “The fact that Gopi will also identify about 10 best young kids during the event should also spur many more to join us,” observed Kiran Pendyala, Head of HRD.
