Awareness campaign on seasonal diseases

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) launched an awareness programme on seasonal and communicable diseases on Saturday. The Corporation would organise ‘burra katha' and street plays across the city to create awareness about mosquitoes, control of diseases, and sanitation. Mayor M.V. Ratna Bindu kicked off the programme near Jandhyala Dakshinamurhty School at Vambay colony.

On the occasion, she said that the burra katha and street plays would evoke interest among people. These were effective media of communication and would have an impact on the people as both aged and children were equally attracted to the burra katha and veedhi natakalu. The Corporation opened helpline –(0866)2573342—and two ambulances were kept ready for emergency, she said.

Municipal Commissioner G. Ravi Babu said that the Corporation formed four teams which would visit all important places in the city to spread the message. The health wing staff took up household survey. They were telling about health facts to members of every household. A rally with students was already organised, he said, adding, the burra katha and street plays would also be helpful in tackling the problem. Deputy Mayor S.P. Gritton, local corporator Jana Reddy, Chief Medical Officer of Health M. Satyanarayana Raju, health officers Sridevi, Sambasiva Rao, Ramana Raju, biologist Babu Srinivas Rao and others were present.
