Textile clusters plan 2-day shutdown from September 24

R. Vimal Kumar

It is in protest against the rise in cotton prices

Work will be affected in Tirupur, Palladam, Somanur Avinashi and Erode clusters

Demands include stopping of speculative trading in cotton

Tirupur: An emergency meeting of the recently-constituted confederation of textile associations and trade unions held here on Monday decided to go for a shut-down in Tirupur and four nearby textile clusters on September 24 and 25 in protest against the continued rising of cotton prices.

The confederation formed under the initiative of Tirupur Exporters and Manufacturers Association (TEAMA) took the decision after the ‘authorities concerned failed to arrest the rise in cotton prices which plunged the apparel industry into a crisis.'

Unanimous

The forum unanimously accepted that the abnormal rise in cotton prices had been making the Indian apparels uncompetitive in the highly price-driven export market.

TEAMA president M.P. Muthurathinam said that the 48-hour bandh would be observed in Tirupur, Palladam, Somanur Avinashi and Erode textile clusters.

The textile units and shops would remain closed on the said dates.

Full cooperation

“The traders have extended full cooperation to us for keeping their outlets/shops closed,” Mr. Muthurathinam said.

The confederation wanted the Union Government to put an end to speculative trading in cotton and asked for imposition of 25 per cent export duty without any caps on exports so as to bring down the cotton prices.

The price of popular varieties like Shankar-6 had increased by about Rs. 9,000 per candy in the last 20 days.

The associations and the trade unions also demanded that the cotton procurement and distribution for meeting domestic apparel production demands should be carried out through Cotton Corporation of India.

Participation

AITUC State president and former MP K. Subbarayan, senior office-bearers of associations such as Tirupur Industrial Federation, Tirupur Export Knit Printers Association, Tirupur Hosiery Yarn Merchants Association, Covai District Powerloom Cloth Manufacturers Association, Erode Textiles and Garments Exporters Association, and trade union activists from CITU, HMS, INTUC, were among others, who attended the meeting.
