Shivashankarappa in the race for KPCC chief post

‘Lingayats want one of their leaders to hold the post'

Shivashankarappa confident that party high command will choose him this time

The Veerashaiva community will hold a meeting in Bangalore on September 15

DAVANGERE: Veteran Congress leader and Davangere MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa has said he is a contender for the post of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president and exuded confidence that the party high command will choose him this time, considering his contribution to the party over the last 55 years.

Talking to presspersons here on Monday, he said that there were a few contenders for the post from the Veerashaiva community, which is the largest in the State. The community wanted one of its leaders to become KPCC president.

Meeting

Mr. Shivashankarappa said that leaders of the Veerashaiva community would hold a meeting in Bangalore on September 15 to chalk out a strategy to impress the Congress high command in this regard.

To a question, he said that there were two types of elections for the post — secret ballot and passing a one-line resolution.

“All these days, all of us had accepted the one-line resolution of the high command and we would continue to do so.” However, a few youth Congress leaders wanted elections to be held for the post.

A decision in this regard will be taken by the party high command, he added. He pooh-poohed the suggestion that unity in the party would be spoiled if elections were held to the post.

He predicted that the Congress would win in both Kadur and Gulbarga constituencies in the by-elections.
