DAVANGERE: A picture painted by a local boy is among the three paintings on which the Postal Department has issued stamps to mark Children's Day this year. N. Manoj, a sixth standard student of JJV school here, participated in a nationwide drawing competition organised by the department in 2008 to bring out stamps on three of the best paintings. Manoj had painted a tiger in its natural habitat, emphasising the urgent need to protect the endangered species. Hundreds of children took part in the competition, and a panel of judges in Delhi shortlisted the best paintings. Manoj's painting was selected as the second best. Cash prize The 12-year-old boy was honoured here by the department at a simple function in his school on Monday and was given a cash award of Rs. 6,000 for his creative work. An elated Manoj said he took two hours to sketch the painting. He took to the art inspired by his uncle, Ramesh, a lecturer in a PU college and a good painter. Manoj has been drawing on various subjects since the second standard. Superintendent of the Postal Department Anantharam said the Children's Day special postage stamp had become a regular feature of the annual stamp issue programme. This year the department celebrates ‘the heart of a child,' bringing out their creativity through stamps. His department had brought out many such paintings by children for several years now. Manoj's teachers and parents expressed happiness over the boy winning national recognition. JVV school principal said, “He is an inspiration to other children. We have seen him drawing and painting in the school and we have appreciated his works many a times. But we never expected our boy to scale such heights.”
