Preparatory work for local bodies poll begins

As many as 24,000 officials would be required to man 3,600 polling booths in the district.

KOCHI: The district administration and the election commission have intensified preparatory works in anticipation of the imminent notification of elections to the local self-government bodies.

At a meeting chaired by District Collector M. Beena here on Monday, the election department officials evaluated the progress of works.

As many as 24,000 officials would be required to man 3,600 polling booths in the district.

Lists of officials of Central and State government institutions, banks, public sector and educational institutions were being drawn up for this purpose.

Instructions have been given to take stern measures against institution heads who fails to submit accurate list of officials at their disposal, said N.E. Meghanath, public relations officer of the State Election Commission.

Officials will be employed using the e-drop system. Works in this regard will be completed within two weeks under the leadership of district informatics officer V.T. Santhosh.

Additional District Magistrate K.N. Raji is the nodal officer for this purpose.

Elections to corporations and municipalities will be held using the voting machines since the voters need to cast only one vote.

Ballot papers will be used elsewhere since voters will have to cast their votes for village, block, and district panchayats.

In municipalities, five officials including the presiding officer would be deployed at polling booths and seven officials in panchayats.

Election Commission has issued special instructions that presiding officers should be of Gazette rank.
