THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Human Rights Commission has ordered the Kannur District Collector to take steps to issue a BPL ration card in place of the APL card issued to a fish worker with two mentally challenged children. K.E. Gangadharan, SHRC member, asked the Collector to report back to him after issuing the BPL card. The order was issued on a complaint filed by Sahadevan Mambally of Shibin Nivas, Thalassery, Pathiriyad. The entire expenditure of the family, including the treatment of the children, is based on the meagre income earned by Mr. Sahadevan. He had been issued an APL card earlier also. Even though he had complained against it, he was issued an APL card this time too. The District Supply Officer explained to the commission that even though he was having APL card, he was being provided 10 kg or rice and 2 kg of wheat at Rs.2 a kg as he was a fish worker. The Vengad grama panchayat secretary told the commission that he was eligible for a BPL card. The commission also asked the government to provide assistance to Mr.Sahadevan for the treatment of his children.
