KRISHNAGIRI: Eight persons were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the violent incidents on the premises of a private school at Pochampalli near here on Monday following the death of 16-year-old S. Suresh, a Plus I student, who was run over by school bus near the institution.

Based on a complaint filed on behalf of the school management, the eight persons were arrested under Sections 147, 148, 448, 436 of IPC and Sec. 3 of Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

They were produced before the Magistrate Court in Pochampalli and remanded to 15 days' judicial custody. The bus driver Moovendran was arrested on Monday night under Section 304 (A) of the IPC.

The police also registered cases under various sections against 150 persons, mainly from the surrounding villages, for indulging in arson in which two school buses were completely burnt and scores of other vehicles damaged.

A special squad has been formed to nab 15 others who, the police claimed, had instigated the violence.

Krishnagiri SP A.G. Babu told The Hindu that the town remained peaceful and the situation was “well under control.” The police, however, did not take chances. Additional pickets had been posted at various places and the school campus brought under security scanner. Armed police constables had been posted at the house of the school correspondent.

The management declared a week's holiday for the school, which had suffered extensive damage. “It was not spontaneous. Systematic destruction took place on Monday. All records, books and furniture were destroyed and class rooms and laboratories damaged. We are yet to assess the loss,” said a source in school management.
