MADURAI: A tyre manufacturing unit would come up at Ambalakaranpatti, near here, Union Minister M.K. Alagiri said here on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters, he said following his appeal to industrial houses to establish production units in Madurai and other southern districts , several corporates had evinced interest. They had even conducted inquiries about the feasibility, among others. From the government's side, “We have assured them of all infrastructural facilities,” he added. Following inspection by a major tyre manufacturer, revenue officials had identified close to 500 acres of land for setting up a plant at Ambalakaranpatti. “The top brass of the company are in touch with me. From now on, other works should begin at a faster pace,” he hoped. Asked to comment about the progress of IT parks, Mr. Alagiri said Information Technology Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna had made a statement about their getting ready for occupation. He felt that the Union Government might consider enhancing the MP's Local Area Development Fund from Rs 2 crore to Rs 9 crore. By this, more works for the local people, such as additional buildings, provision for drinking water, libraries, construction of community centres, toilets and many things, could be undertaken, he said. At a time when an MLA had Rs 1.75 crore for development of an Assembly constituency, the funds for Lok Sabha MP should be more. “We have conveyed our wish to the Prime Minister and Finance Minister. Just now, we (MPs) have received a hike in our salaries. Next we will press for an increase of (development) funds,” he added. All 234 seats Some months back, Mr. Alagiri had predicted that the DMK combine would win 200 seats in the ensuing Assembly elections. He said that the people were eager to vote for the DMK for another term in power. “I will not be surprised if DMK combine wins all the 234 seats,” he said in a confident tone. About DMDK leader Vijayakant's appeal to bring down the DMK government, Mr. Alagiri said, “People will take care of it.” DMK president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had done so many good things and implemented many welfare measures for the people, he added.
