Profile of Dr. M.Veerappa Moily



Hon'ble Union Minister of Law and Justice

Born on 12 {+t} {+h} January 1940 at Moodbidri Village in Karkala Taluk of Dakshina Kannada, Dr Veerappa Moily did his B.A and B.L from Mysore University. He worked as a lawyer in the initial years in the law firm, Moily Associates, before entering Politics. He was Minister of Small Scale Industries during 1974-77 and was Minister of Finance and Planning during 1980-82. During 1983-85, he was the leader of opposition in the Karnataka Assembly. Then he was Minister of Law, Youth service, Culture, Information, Parliamentary Affairs and education during 1989-92. Dr Moily took over as Chief Minister of Karnataka in 1992 and continued in that position till 1994. He was the Chairman of tax Reforms Commission from 2000-02 and Revenue Commission from 2002-04. During August 2005 to 31 {+s} {+t} March 2009, Dr Veerappa Moily was the Chairman, 2 {+n} {+d} Administrative Reforms Commission, Govt. of India. Dr Veerappa Moily was inducted into the Union Cabinet in 2009 as Minister for Law and Justice. He was instrumental in the establishment of The National Law School University at Bangalore. In his 40 years of public life, policy-making, governance and politics, Dr Veerappa Moily Formulated and implemented pioneering concepts in India's Education sector. He also represented the Government of India in projects with leading organizations, World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Reserve Bank of India, Planning Commission etc. Dr Moily was awarded three Honorary Doctorates by NALSAR- Hyderabad, Russian Academy and Mangalore University. He also has many awards to his credit. A multi-faceted personality, Dr Moily has considerable achievements in Kannada Literature and is the author of the of epic poem
