Girls make a beeline to Fair and Lovely scholarships

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The hearts of 50 to 60 girl students from economically underprivileged backgrounds galloped with anticipation and fear of rejection, as the interviews for ‘Fair and Lovely Scholarship 2010' were in progress at the Taj Deccan Hotel here on Tuesday.

The cosmetic brand which claims to empower women through its skin lightening cream is now up to empowering them through its funding.

And the selection process was quite tricky.

“I will be forced to stop my education if I don't get this scholarship,” a medico said, begetting doubtful glances from a sympathetic interviewer.

Social consciousness

According to the organisers, women who ooze confidence and show promise towards reaching their dreams with or without the scholarship alone will get the funding. The zeal should be coupled with some amount of social consciousness expressed by way of what they would do to “give back to the society”. The interviews are being conducted in seven cities — Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Bangalore, and Chandigarh -- for students across 23 States. In all, 100 to 150 scholarships will be given, each varying between Rs.5,000 to Rs. 1 lakh.
