Gymnastics equipment arrive

NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here is getting ready to hold the gymnastics event after the arrival of the equipment for the Commonwealth Games.

“The podium is being erected. The equipment have arrived and are being fitted at the stadium. Everything is on track now,” said Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) Secretary K.S. Rathore on Wednesday.

Rathore was relieved that the venue would be ready by the time the gymnasts reached here from September 23 onwards.

The Federation Cup, the ‘test' event for the Commonwealth Games, had been organised at the venue last month. Since the equipment had not arrived by then, the competition had to be held with the equipment purchased for the Ranchi National Games.

Indian team's foreign coach Vladimir Chertkov had said that the host lost the home advantage since the venue was not completely ready.

“We (the Core Group of athletes) have lost the little advantage of one-and-a-half months' training on the podium here,” Chertkov had said.

The Indian gymnasts, who are training in Pune, would move to the Games Village after September 23. — Principal Correspondent
