VIZIANAGARAM: Over 500 municipal sanitation workers, including permanent employees, in the fort town launched indefinite strike from Wednesday after the Commissioner failed to implement the agreement reached with the Municipal Contract Workers and Employees' Union representatives, affiliated to CITU, on September 6. According to T.V. Ramana, general secretary of the union, the Commissioner forced contract and permanent employees (sanitation) to go on an indefinite strike since he failed to implement six of the 18 genuine demands of the workers within a week from the date of the agreement. He said that it was agreed to settle salary bills of contract workers from April to July 31. That apart, the Commissioner had also agreed to deposit the loan instalments that 150 of the 290 permanent workers had availed in the past. The municipality had been deducting the instalment amount from salary bills of each employee but did not deposit with the bank. As a result, the loan amount with interest had been increasing. Similarly, it was not depositing EPF for the last seven months and LIC premiums of 65 employees. As far as permanent workers concerned, Mr. Ramana said that 150 of the 290 permanent workers availed a loan of Rs.30,000 each from Andhra Bank with an agreement to re-pay in equal instalments every month from their salary.
