SI suspended for role in kidnap of journalist

Correspondent

Karwar: Raman Gupta, Superintendent of Police, Uttara Kannada district, on Thursday suspended Manjunath Nayak, Sub-Inspector of Police in Kumta police station for his role in kidnapping of the journalist V.D. Bhat last week. Mr. Bhat is the reporter of a Kannada daily.

Mr. Gupta had appointed M.L. Naik, Dy. SP from Dandeli and Aravind Kalagujji, inspector of District Crime Investigation Bureau, to inquire into the allegations made by Mr. Bhat and others that the journalist was kidnapped on the behest of Mr. Nayak. It was alleged that Mr. Bhat had incurred the wrath of a local politician and Mr. Nayak after he exposed the land mafia and flesh trade in Kumta taluk in his newspaper.

The investigating team reported that prima facie it appeared that Mr. Nayak had played a major role in harassing Mr. Bhat. Sources said that the van and persons involved in the kidnap have been identified.
