Loyola College takes the honours

COIMBATORE: Loyola College (Chennai) defeated Jamal Mohammed College (Tiruchi) 3-1, via tie-breaker, to emerge champion of the 20th State-level inter-collegiate football tournament for the PSG Trophy here on Thursday.

The result (final): Loyola College 3 (C. Balasubramaniam, A. Dilip Kumar, M.B. Arun) bt Jamal Mohammed 1 (M. Santhosh) .

Ball badminton trials

The Coimbatore District Ball Badminton Association will conduct selection trials for under-19 boys and girls on September 26 at 7.30 a.m. Players born on or after January 1, 1992, are eligible.

The selected players will represent Coimbatore in the inter-district championship to be held at Dharapuram Police Station grounds on October 2 and 3.

Beach volleyball

To be showcased with all the trappings of an extravaganza from September 26 to October 2 on the sands of Elliot's Beach, Chennai, the FIVB-Chennai Challenger international beach volleyball tournament promises to be the biggest event ever held here in this sport.

A highlight of the side shows during the tournament is the proposed fashion parade involving the 200-odd international participants in Indian traditional costumes.

That as many as 57 men and 26 women's teams from over 30 countries across the continents have entered the fray clearly underscores the recognition accorded by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). For the first time, a squad from Venezuela is expected to participate.

GRU takes trophy

In Dindigul, Gandhigram Rural University (GRU) scripted a 24-run win over Samurai CC in the final to emerge the TNCA-Dindigul DCA third division champion.

The scores: Third division: Final: Gandhigram Rural University 138 for nine in 23 overs (S. Soundar 29, Rajesh Kumar 28, I. Dominick Samson three for 30) bt Samurai CC 114 for eight in 23 overs (Hassain 40, Rajesh Kumar four for 32).
