NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod for expanding the scope of the e-court project to cover about 1,000 more courts under the scheme. With the decision, a total of 14,249 courts in 3,069 court complexes would be covered under the scheme, as against the coverage of 13,348 courts in 2,100 court complexes approved earlier. Consequently, the estimated cost of the project has been more than doubled to Rs.935 crore from Rs.441.8 crore. E-courts is one of the mission-mode projects of e-governance under the National e-Governance Plan. Under the project, comprehensive computerisation and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) enablement of 12,000 courts in 2,100 court complexes is scheduled to be completed by March 2012 and the balance by March 2014. Empowerment committee The revised cost estimates make provisions for wide area network connectivity, data entry of pending cases, and installation of equipment for uninterrupted power supply for the ICT infrastructure, among other things. An empowerment committee is to be constituted in the Department of Justice to provide strategic direction and guidance for the project. The scheme is aimed at facilitating transparent flow of information on case status and other such aspects to litigants and other stakeholders, apart from improving court management. It would also provide for establishment of video conferencing facilities in courts and prisons to facilitate quicker disposal of cases.
