Bangalore: The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (S) shared the honours by bagging a seat each in the Assembly byelections from Gulbarga South and Kadur constituencies. The Congress was relegated to the third position in both constituencies. Y.C. Vishwanath of the BJP won in Kadur while Aruna Chandrashekhar Patil Revoor of the JD(S) emerged victorious in Gulbarga South. The BJP wrested Kadur seat from the Congress. Its candidate, Dr. Vishwanath defeated Y.S.V. Datta, MLC, of the JD(S) by a margin of 13,897 votes. This is the second defeat for Mr. Datta, who lost to the late K.M. Krishnamurthy in 2008. Congress candidate K.M. Kemparaju secured just 30,330 votes as against 55,796 for the BJP and 41,899 votes for the JD(S).In the triangular contest in Gulbarga South, Ms. Revoor, widow of Chandrasekhar Patil Revoor, emerged victorious, with the BJP conceding the seat. Riding a sympathy wave, Ms. Revoor won by a margin of 3,532 votes. Ms. Revoor secured 39,430 votes, while the BJP's Shashil Namoshi got 35,898 votes. Congress candidate Ajay Singh, son of the former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh, MP, received 35,567 votes. Following the Congress rout, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, owning moral responsibility. KPCC president R.V. Deshpande has requested that he be relieved from the post of KPCC president.
