Harmony: Vinayaka idol procession in Muthupettai on Saturday. TIRUVARUR: Vinayaka Chathurthi processions were taken out peacefully at Muthupettai on Saturday. Processions of 16 Vinayaka idols from various places started at the stipulated time 2 p.m. and the idols reached the old bus stand by 4 p.m. From there, they were taken and immersed in river Baminiyar, the notified immersion point. People, cutting across religious barriers, participated in large numbers in the processions. Over 3,000 police personnel, led by six Superintendents of Police, 10 Deputy Superintendents of Police, were deployed for bandobust duty. The procession was taken out through the permitted route before reaching the immersion point. Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, Karan Singha; Deputy Inspector General of police, Thanjavur Range, R. Thirugnanam; Superintendents of Police, K. A. Senthilvelan (Thanjavur), and P. Moorthy (Tiruvarur), oversaw the bandobust arrangements. M. Chandrasekaran, Collector, said that people co-operated with the authorities and the event passed off peacefully. “One interesting feature is the participation of people in large numbers in the procession indicating religious harmony”, Mr. Chandrasekaran said. The procession went via Jambuvanodai Dargah, old bus stand, Sembadavankadu railway gate to reach river Baminiar. Mr. Moorthy, SP, said that support from police headquarters made it possible to provide the best security and ensure peaceful procession at Muthupettai. Director General of Police Letika Saran and Additional Director General of police K. Radhakrishnan personally monitored the arrangements. Police personnel were brought from various places like Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Ramanathapuram , he added.
