Naxalites hold a meeting before the gruesome act Maoists leave a note at the spot BERHAMPUR: Maoists murdered a man and his son in remote Lachhmani village of Laxmipur block of Koraput district of south Orissa on Saturday night. The victims were identified as Kapur Khara and his son Dhisa Khara. Both were small-time traders of the village who were also alleged to be involved in liquor trading. Maoists left a letter in Telugu at the spot of murder owning responsibility to the double murder. A group of around 20 armed Maoists reached the remote village and forced the villagers to attend a meeting. It was a kind of ‘praja court', Koraput Superintendent of Police Anup Sahu said. At around 8.30 p.m. all other villagers were ordered to return home, while Kapur and his son were asked to stay back. After some time the Maoists split their throats killing them on the spot. Mr. Sahu said the gruesome act of Maoists was aimed at alienating tribals from non-tribals. A few days ago, a tussle occurred between the victims, who are non-tribals and tribals of the village. Cows of Khara family had grazed inside the fields of tribals. Some tribals of the area allegedly approached the Maoists to settle the issue. It was alleged that Maoists had preferred to take a drastic action to create panic among tribals and non-tribals opposed to them. It may be noted that Maoists have been trying to strengthen their base in Koraput district through a series of killings of non-tribals who were opposed to their violent activities and the Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) supported by them. On killing spree Zilla Parishad member, Anand Kirsani, was murdered in Semiliguda block on August 29. Maoists also murdered founder of CMAS Kendruka Arjun on August 10 at Katulpeta in Bandhugaon block. Arjun was opposed to Maoists and the CMAS activists of Bandhugaon who supported him had parted ways with the CMAS of Narayanpatna block. On August 15 night, Maoists murdered a teacher, Ghasi Kendruka (35), at Gotiguda village of Narayanpatna block. He was also a supporter of ‘Shanti Committee' and opposed to the violent activities of Narayanpatna-based Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS). On August 23 night, Maoists murdered Sikunu Meleka (35) at Tentulipadar in Narayanpatna block. He was a former supporter of CMAS and Maoists in Tentulipadar area of Narayanpatna block, who had got himself detached from the violent activities of the CMAS to lead a normal life. On Saturday morning a village guard, Lalit Hantal, was murdered in a similar manner in Balimela police station area of Malkangiri district. The naxalites slit his throat with a sharp weapon.
