Karichal Chundan wins Kallada Boat Race

‘Devadas' and ‘Jawahar Thayangiri' come second and third respectively in the 41st edition of the race

KOLLAM: ‘Karichal Chundan' of the Jesus Boat Club, Kollam, captained by Jiji Jacob, won the 41st Kallada Boat Race held at the Karuthrakadavu course of the Kallada river at Munroe Thuruthu here on Sunday.

Kollam Saint George Boat Club's ‘Devadas' that was captained by G. Gopalakrishna Pillai came second and the boat ‘Jawahar Thayangiri' of the Town Boat Club, Karunagapally, captained by Praveen Kumar, came third. The finalists were selected from three rounds of heats in which eleven snake boats competed.

In the losers' finals for the boats which came second in the heats, the snake boat ‘Payipadan' of Sangham Kanetti, Karunagapally, captained by Srijith, emerged first.

‘Sree Ganesh' of the Keravapuram Boat Club, Karunagapally, captained by P.K. Prakash, emerged second and ‘Karuvatta Sree Vinayakan' of the Villimangalam Boat Club at Munroethuruthu, captained by Shaji K.G., was in the third position.

In the race for the ‘Iruttukuthi' category boats, ‘Padakkuthira' captained by Rajesh won the first prize, ‘Thuruthithara' captained by Pranavjith came in the second position and ‘Mamoodan' captained by Victor in the third position. Four boats had competed for the race in this category.

Races were also held for the ‘Thekkanodi', ‘Veppu grade-A' and ‘Veppu grade-B' category boats. The Karichal Chundan team was presented with the Kallada rolling trophy and a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh. Team Devadas received a purse of Rs.50,000 and Team Jawahar Thayangiri received a cash prize of Rs.25,000.

Industrialist C.K. Menon presented the trophy and cash prizes to the winners.

Sail past and mass drill

The competitions were preceded by a colourful sail-past and mass drill by the boats competing in the race. District Collector Devendrakumar Dhudawat took the salute. Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, Education Minister M.A. Baby and BJP leader O. Rajagopal were present among other dignitaries.

The inaugural function was dropped in view of the election code of conduct coming into force.
