Bijapur Bulls defeated Mangalore United by two wickets

Karun Nair (63) stitched a 75-run fifth-wicket partnership with Daniel Sequeria

SHEER joy: Stuart Binny celebrates after guiding Bijapur Bulls to two-wicket win on Sunday.

Bangalore: Defending champion Provident Bangalore finally relinquished the spectre of defeat and registered its first victory from three matches in the Mantri Karnataka Premier League at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Sunday night. Provident defeated Bangalore Brigadiers by seven wickets.

Pursuing Brigadiers' 141 for nine in 20 overs, Provident motored along smoothly as a dominant Thilak Naidu (65 n.o., 52b, 9x4) and a sedate M.K. Manjunath (26) etched 93 runs for the first wicket. Thilak cut with aplomb and later found a fiery ally in Aniruddha Joshi (25, 17b, 1x4, 1x6) to help Provident score 145 for three in 19.4 overs.

Prior to Provident's good luck under lights, Brigadiers savoured a perfect start from openers Syed Ibrez (42) and K.L. Rahul (34), who shared 85 runs before six wickets tumbled for a mere 33 runs. The middle-order then wilted before the innings gained a blitz from Vinu Prasad (26, 7b, 1x4, 3x6).

The day began with Ganesh Satish's captain's knock (58 n.o., 55b, 4x4, 1x6) that helped Malnad Gladiators defeat Mysore Maharajas by seven wickets. Chasing Maharajas' 133 for seven in 20 overs, Gladiators finished with 135 for three in 19.1 overs and fittingly Ganesh struck the winning four.

Ganesh and Kunal Kapoor stitched 61 runs for the third-wicket. The duo struck a six each off C. Raghu and Kunal's big-hit smashed into a Xylo, the prize for the ‘Man of the Tournament.' Though Kunal fell, Ganesh secured victory with ease. In the afternoon, Maharajas found a late flourish through its captain Chetan William (22). Later in the evening, Bijapur Bulls defeated Mangalore United by two wickets. Chasing United's 142 for seven in 20 overs, Bulls suffered a stutter due to the middle-order's ineptitude before Stuart Binny (47 n.o., 32b, 3x4, 1x6) tempered his aggression and helped his team finish at 146 for eight in 20 overs.

Earlier, United rode on opener Karun Nair's 63 (52b, 4x4, 1x6) that papered the cracks inflicted by seamer Nithin Mulki (four for 15).

The scores:

Mysore Maharajas 133 for seven in 20 overs (K.B. Pawan 27, C. Raghu 25, K. Gowtham two for 22, S.L. Akshay two for 40) lost to Malnad Gladiators 135 for three in 19.1 overs (Ganesh Satish 58 n.o., Kunal Kapoor 28).

Mangalore United 142 for seven in 20 overs (Karun Nair 63, D. Sequeria 35, N. Nidhuvan 28, N. Mulki four for 15, Jayaprakash Shetty two for 28) lost to Bijapur Bulls 146 for eight in 20 overs (Stuart Binny 47 n.o., Gaurav Dhiman 34, D. Sequeria three for 31, Aleem two for 24).

Bangalore Brigadiers 141 for nine in 20 overs (Syed Ibrez 42, K.L. Rahul 34, Vinu Prasad 26, Anand Katti three for 41, Aniruddha Joshi two for 19, N.C. Aiyappa two for 21) lost to Provident Bangalore 145 for three in 19.4 overs (Thilak Naidu 65 n.o., M.K. Manjunath 26, Aniruddha Joshi 25).
