750 folk artists from Thanjavur to take part

THANJAVUR: A total of 750 folk artists from Thanjavur district will take part in the cultural programmes organised at seven places in Thanjavur for the Millennium celebrations of the Big Temple to be held from September 22 to September 26 said P. Mani, Commissioner of Art and Culture, Tamil Nadu Government here on Monday. He told presspersons that with a view to give importance and opportunity to local talents, folk artists from the district have been selected for the programmes. Apart from them, another hundred folk artists from other districts will also take part in the programmes.

“Folk programmes received tremendous response from people at the World Classical Tamil Conference held at Coimbatore. Here also they may be a big hit.

Besides Big Temple, they are to be held at Sivaganga Park, Rajaraja Cholan Mani Mandapam, Tholkappiar Arangam, Old housing unit, Karantai Tamil Sangam and Thilakar Thidal.

Each folk artist will be paid Rs.800 per day. Programmes include Karagam, Thappattam, Therukuthu, Silampattam, Kolattam, Mayilattam, Kavadiyattam, Poikkal Kuthiraiyattam, Villupattu, Lavani, etc.

An historical drama “Raja Rajan” will be staged at Thilakar Thidal by T.K.S. Pugazhendhi and T.K.S. Kalaivanan party on September 25 at 8 p.m.
