Staff Reporter

Parties warned against causing communal divides

Religious places not to be used for canvassing

MALAPPURAM: District Collector M.C. Mohandas has requested political parties to abide by the election code of conduct issued by the Election Commission for the upcoming local body elections.

He was presiding over a meeting held in connection with implementing the code of electoral conduct at the Collectorate conference hall here on Monday.

He warned the political parties against resorting to any action that could widen caste or community divides. Parties or candidates should desist from personally targeting other candidates, he said. Votes should not be canvassed on the basis of caste and community. Mosques, temples or churches should not be used for canvassing. Bribing or threatening the voters would be viewed seriously, he said. Demonstrations or protests in front of individual's houses will not be allowed to register protest or dissent against particular individuals. Banners, posters, flags or party colours should not be fixed on the properties of others without their consent. Banners, posters and cut-outs should not be displayed on government office premises.

Poll officials should be alerted of all meetings in connection with the elections. Loudspeakers should be used only with prior consent. The grounds of educational institutions should not be used for election purposes. Police should be informed in advance of rallies and marches. Measures should be taken to control traffic. Compliance to the guidelines should be ensured before using loudspeakers on vehicles.
