Tourism Day celebrations from Sept. 25

Westin College of Hotel Management will host an ‘international chef competition'

Commissioner of Police will flag off a tourism awareness walk


VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada division of the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC), in association with Westin College of Hotel Management and Hoteliers' Association of Vijayawada, will host three-day celebrations to mark ‘World Tourism Day 2010'.

The celebrations will begin with the inaugural at 8.30 a.m. on September 25 in Hotel D.V. Manor. Minister for Animal Husbandry and Fisheries K. Parthasarathy, Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu and Krishna District Collector Peeyush Kumar will attend, APTDC Divisional Manager G. Ramakrishna told a press conference on Tuesday.

The inaugural will be followed by a string of activities at different venues on the first day. A mini summit on tourism development in Krishna district will be attended by representatives of various allied sectors that have a role to play in growth and expansion of the hospitality industry, at Hotel Fortune Murali Park at 10.30 a.m.

From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Westin College of Hotel Management will host an ‘international chef competition' while academic events like elocution, drawing and essay writing will concurrently be held at Maris Stella College.

On September 26, Commissioner of Police P.S.R. Anjaneyulu will flag off a tourism awareness walk that will commence at Benz Circle and end at PWD Grounds. On the same day, women will be given an opportunity to prove their culinary skills at a cooking contest to be hosted by Hotel Manorama.

Carnival

The three-day carnival will culminate in a cultural bonanza at the picturesque Haritha Berm Park at Bhavanipuram on September 27. “The summit is the first of its kind, being organised to bring allied sectors on to a common platform and explore new avenues of developing tourism,” said K. Durga Prasad, Director of Westin College of Hotel Management.

“There are vast untapped hospitality and tourism resources in the region. We need to publicise them in order to attract tourists to this place,” said K. Pattabhi Ram, secretary of the Vijayawada Hoteliers' Association. He said the joint endeavour would be to lay bear the tourism potential of the region that had all the trappings of a holiday-maker's delight.
