Kin allege medical negligence over patient's death in NIMS

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Punjagutta police on Tuesday registered a criminal case against the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences after family members of a patient, Raghavendra Rao, 44, who died while undergoing treatment, accused the doctors of medical negligence.

Rao from Kapra was admitted to the NIMS on August 2 for surgery for a leg injury. The next day, he slipped into coma after being administered anaesthesia for the scheduled surgery. He was in coma in the hospital since then. Rao's family members maintained that they had spend more than Rs.7 lakh since he slipped into coma but there was no improvement. According to them, the doctors told them five days ago that he was recovering. “On Monday, they approached the doctors stating that they found foul smell emanating from Rao and they believed he had died. They claimed that the doctors told them he was alive then,” the Punjagutta Inspector, Ashoka Chakravarthi, said.On Tuesday morning, the victim's family moved the State Human Rights Commission while around 1.30 p.m. the NIMS doctors declared Rao dead. “His kin charged that negligence in administration of anaesthesia aggravated his condition and ultimately resulted in his death,” the Inspector said.
