VIJAYAWADA: A rich musical tribute was paid to legendary classical singer M.S. Subbulakshmi by Pemmaraju Surya Rao, an ‘A' grade artiste of the All India Radio and Doordarshan, in a programme organised jointly by The Hindu and Manyam's Property and Wealth Management Systems Limited at Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao Government College of Music and Dance, on Friday.

Mr. Surya Rao enthralled the audience with rendition of nine compositions, which were a mix of bhajans, devotional songs and keerthanas of the trinity of Carnatic music.

Beginning with “Vande nisamaham”, a composition of Mysore Vasudevachar in Hamsadhwani ragam, Mr. Surya Rao sang “O Jagadamba” of Shyamasastri in Ananda Bhairavi ragam, ‘Intha Sowkhyamani of Thyagaraja in Kafi ragam, ‘Kamakshi Kamakoti Peethavasini' of Muthuswamy Deekshitar in Simhendra Madhyama ragam, ‘Amarangalanade' of Annamayya in Mohana Kalyani ragam, ‘Pahirama Rama Anuchu', a Thyagaraja Divyanama Sankeerthana in Kharaharapriya ragam, ‘Jeporeman Ramnam Sukhdayee', a Meera bhajan in Behag ragam and ‘Hari Bhajanko Maanre', a Kabri bhajan in Bhairava ragam. He concluded the programme with a Thillana composed by Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna.

Noble quality

Renowned violinist Annavarapu Ramaswamy, who graced the evening as chief guest, recollected his association with Subbulaskhmi and said that the great vocalist sang for ‘bhakthi' (devotion) and not for ‘bhukthi' (livelihood). “Words fail in expressing her contribution not only to the world of music but also to the mankind,” he said.

Columnist Andavalli Satyanarayana, the guest of honour, said Subbulakshmi won the appreciation of everyone by her selfless service to society, “She is known for her charity. She reached out to people from all walks of life through her devotional renditions,” he said.

K.S. Subrahmanyam, managing director, Manyam's Property and Wealth Management Systems Limited, said his company was proud to associate with a programme in memory of Subbulakshmi and promised to be a part of The Hindu's future endeavours in the field of classical music. K. Chandrasekaran, Regional General Manager, The Hindu, Vijayawada, spoke. The organising committee felicitated Mr. Surya Rao and the supporting artistes P. Nageswara Rao (violin), M. Vijay Kumar (mrudangam) and K. Sasidhar (vocal) along with Annavarapu Ramaswamy and Andavalli Satyanarayana.
