Cashew, mango to be grown under NREGS

SRIKAKULAM: The district administration has decided to bring barren lands under cultivation with the support of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. About 1,768 acres of land will be distributed to SC and ST families for the cultivation of cashew and mango under the scheme.

The horticulture department will ensure supply of water and loans to the selected families. The district collector N. Srikanth who reviewed the scheme said the programme would benefit villagers in 13 mandals in the district.

He inspected the implementation of the scheme in Kottakunkam villager of Laveru mandal and interacted with the villagers. He asked them to utilise the scheme to the optimum level as government agencies will provide financial assistance also for the cultivation of horticulture products.

According to him, around Rs.6.82 crore will be spent for cashew and mango plantation under the scheme.

The beneficiaries will also be given pattas if they develop barren lands under the scheme. Assistant director of Horticulture department Mr.Srinivas said combining the horticulture schemes with NREGS will benefit many SC and ST families.

Complaint

Meanwhile, several villagers complained that the Transco officials were not responding to their grievances though they had lodged complaints about the frequent power cuts in Laveru mandal. Immediately, Mr.Srikanth directed the Transco officials to ensure proper power supply otherwise crops will get damaged.
