Asher Noria bags a gold medal at double trap shooting in Munich To represent the country at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi
Spot on: Tourism Minister J. Geeta Reddy with Asher Noria at HPS, Begumpet on Friday. HYDERABAD: With two double trap gold medals under his belt, Asher Noria was a beaming, blushing shooter at a felicitation organised at his alma mater, Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet. The city boy, currently pursuing engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, bagged a gold medal at double trap shooting (junior category) at the 50th ISSF World Championship in Munich last month, equalling the world record of 146/150. The win came on the heels of his gold medal win at the International Junior shooting event at Suhl, Germany in May earlier this year. He also won gold at the same event last year. At a function organised by the school's alumni association, Jagirdars College and The Hyderabad Public School Old Students Association here Friday, Tourism and I&PR Minister J. Geeta Reddy presented Asher an award of excellence, recognising his ‘significant achievements to sports and setting an example for alumni and youth'. Asher was the head boy of the school during 2009-10. During the course of his six year career, he has amassed an impressive tally of 23 gold, 22 silver and 12 bronze medals in addition to 11 trophies and awards. He has also been selected to represent the country at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. “It all started when he was nine years old,” his father Gusti J. Noria told the gathering. Mr. Noria, himself an alumnus of the school, was also a double trap shooter. “I found him playing with an air gun my father presented me when I was 10 years old.” Great example Congratulating him on the occasion, Ms. Reddy told the assembled students, “You have a great example in Asher. He has picked up shooting from his father, but he has gone much, much ahead of his father.” “One among you has risen so tall right in front of you.” Asher would be leaving for Delhi Friday night. “I am going to the Commonwealth village. This is one of the best moments in my life,” said the lanky shooter after the felicitation. “I have one dream that is to go there and make my country proud once again.”
