VISAKHAPATNAM: Freedom-fighter and eminent educationist who established the BVK College in the city Pilla Ramarao will be felicitated by his students at the VUDA children's theatre on Saturday at 5.30 p.m. Announcing this at a media conference here on Friday, advocate and former student of BVK College P. Narayana Murthy said the octogenarian was being felicitated by Sneha Bharati, an association of alumni of BVK colleges, as a mark of respect to “a great teacher, human being and educationist who did not merely impart education but moulded the character of his students to make them responsible citizens.” A post-graduate in physics from Andhra University, Mr. Rama Rao began his career as a demonstrator and physics teacher in Mrs. A.V.N College in 1946. He worked in the college till 1972 and then he assumed charge as the founder-principal of BVK Junior College and later degree college. He worked in the college till 1985. As an Intermediate student, Mr. Rama Rao participated in the Quit India movement and was imprisoned by the British. Later, he again underwent prolonged imprisonment for 18 months during the emergency period. His only son Ramana Murthy who is a lecturer in Sanskrit in BVK Junior College, said his father had shunned all honours, awards and rewards as a freedom - fighter. Sneha Bharati is organising a lecture on the occasion. Prof. A. Prasanna Kumar will deliver the lecture. Mr. D.V Subba Rao, the former mayor and also a student of Mr. Rama Rao, will be the chief guest at the felicitation function.
