Doctor held on cheque book theft charge

HYDERABAD: Rajendra Prasad, 38, a duty medical officer of MNJ cancer hospital working on contract basis, was arrested by the Nampally police on Friday on charge of stealing a cheque book from the hospital and withdrawing Rs. 98,000 fraudulently.

The accused had stolen a cheque book from the hospital almirah and withdrew the money from a bank at Khairatabad, the Nampally Inspector, P. Sridhar, said. The cheque book had seven leaves and two of them were issued for payment of Rs. 4,000 each to two visiting professors.

The accused withdrew Rs. 4,000 using one cheque and tampered with the second one changing the figure to Rs. 94,000, according to the Inspector. Even as the police registered a case and were looking out for the suspects, the accused went to the bank again on Friday to present a cheque to withdraw Rs. 1,90,000 and was caught.
